The most popular way of sprouting is in a glass jar, we use our Twist & Sprout wide mouthed jar to enable good ventilation and easy drainage. This method is a quick way to start sprouting and it works well for most varieties of seeds, grains, and beans.
For best results the jar must be cleaned thoroughly using hot soapy water or by putting it through the dishwasher.
This is how we Sprout:
- Soak: Place seeds, grains or beans in the jar. Add water to fill the jar at least half way. Put on the mesh lid.
- Drain and Rinse: Drain the soaking water. Remove the mesh lid and rinse the seeds, grains or beans swirling gently. Replace the mesh lid and drain again.
- Sprout: In a well ventilated spot away from direct sunlight place the jar on its stand, on the tray so it can catch the excess water.
- Rinse and Drain: At least twice a day, add water to the jar, swirl to rinse. Drain thoroughly after rinsing and return the jar to its stand.
- Watch and wait: Depending on the variety, your seeds, grains or beans will begin to sprout in 1-3 days. The emerging sprout will look like a little tail coming out of the seed, bean or grain.
- Harvest: When ready to eat, rinse and drain for a final time. Dry the sprouts on a paper towel to remove all excess moisture. Sprouts can be refrigerated and kept in an airtight container for up to five days.
